My Experience with the Dover Tent Sale

Like everyone else, I was thrilled to get my flyer in the mail announcing the spring tent sale at Dover. This is a time to score great deals at up to 70% off with potential of additional discounts. Last year, I got so many useful items at the sale. This year was a bit of a different story.

I only ended up buying three items from the sale. All the other things that I needed, I had to buy full price in-store. I was in desperate need of some new breeches, a new flysheet, riding socks and fly spray to stock up on.  None of the breeches in my price range fit me. I tried on probably 5 or 6 different pairs in several sizes before I gave up. There was one fly sheet that was pony sized. The only fly masks at the sale did not have ear coverage. No socks! They had a lack of care products as well. I remember last year I got fly spray, leather oil, and hoof hardener all on sale. So disappointing! Well without further ado, I will share with you what I did buy from the sale and the items that I picked out in-store.

Tent Sale

I got Z some new sports boots for $40 that were originally $100. My old ones were starting to rub and irritate a spot on the outside of his cannon bone. Then my favorite purchase was two summer riding tanks. These are by Noble Outfitters and made in soft dry-fit material. They came in a variety of patterns and colors. I chose a purple and a blue/green design. Each of the tanks went for $20.

…that’s it.

In-Store

A fly sheet was a must and I could not leave without one. I went and looked at several options and guess what brand I decided on? Weatherbeeta! This brand is truly amazing. I’ve had great success with my medium weight blanket and turnout sheet by them. They offer high quality prices for an affordable price. The specific sheet that I got was the ComFiTex Essential Mesh II. It is light weight, yet durable.  The fly spray I ended up getting was the UltraShield Ex that comes in a black bottle. They redesigned the bottle to be able to spray in all directions, including upside down!

I got two pairs of socks. One with flamingos and one with SLOTHS! I saw those and had to have them. The brands were Ovation and Noble Outfitters, both about $10 each.

I purchased two pairs of breeches. One pair was a super score as they were originally $135, but were on a Mother’s Day deal for $41! They were the Noble Outfitters Signature Side-Zip Breeches. These are still on sale online and in-store! The other pair I got were the ribbed full-seat breeches by Tuff Rider. I’ve had great experience with these breeches in the past, so I knew it would be a good purchase. I got them in a fun, rusty blue color for about $50.

The last item I purchased was a beautiful light blue sunshirt by Ariat. In the summer, I try to ride when the sun is not at its fiercest, but sometimes I do need to ride in the afternoon when the sun is brutal. UV protection is so important and I love that this shirt protects me from the sun’s harmful rays, while keeping me cool with mesh materials. I already had this shirt in navy, so I knew I would love another one. They had one more that was in a peachy color with a horse print on it. I wanted it so bad, but I told myself I only needed to buy one, so I went with the blue since it would go with more.

In conclusion, I think we all have a love-hate relationship with Dover. They are my go to for items needed quickly and they have a great variety of products and options. They really let me down this year with the tent sale though! Maybe next time, Dover!

Happy Budgeting!

My Top 10 Picks from Smartpak’s Spring Catalog

1. Piper Tights

26497_berry_dt

I love riding tights rather than breeches on hot summer days, but what really caught my eye with these was the thigh pocket. It is perfect to put your phone in while riding! I ride by myself a lot, so I always like to have my phone on my body incase of an emergency. Stuffing it into the pockets of my breeches is not comfortable and I worry about it falling out! I have seen some other tights with pockets like these, but they were well over $100. Smartpak’s Piper Tights retail for $49.95.

2.  Piper Breeches

20947_greyturq_model

I have not personally tried these, but I have heard wonderful things about them and will be ordering some soon! They seem to be the perfect middle ground between cheaper breeches and the ones that will break your bank. They come in so many different fun colors. It is hard to choose just one! They are available in original or midrise, and knee patch or fullseat. Piper Breeches retail for $79.95-$89.95.

3. Horseware Competition Jacket

Ok I am obsessed with this one. Not only is it a steal to get a quality show coat for $109.95, but it comes in gorgeous colors- including one I have never seen before! It comes in a khaki with a blush pink collar and I am dying to have it. Unfortunately, if I walked in the hunter ring with that on, the judge would take one look at me and move me to the bottom of the list haha. If you do jumpers, you should definitely check out this gorgeous coat! It also comes in traditional navy and black, as well as hunter green and maroon. I am set on getting a green or maroon coat this summer!

4. Piper Long Sleeve Show Shirt

I adore the cute print options that are available on the collar and cuffs with this shirt. There are flowers, donuts, polkadots, or little foxes to choose from. On the traditional white show shirt, you can rock this in the hunter and eq rings, without showing it off to the judge! This shirt goes for $34.95, which is way cheaper than what I have been paying for show shirts in the past. I’ve got to try this one!

5. Piper Short Sleeve Polo

Who doesn’t need more summer appropriate shirts for schooling? At only $ 29.95, this polo is perfect to keep you looking sharp during your lessons or hacks!

6. Piper Long Sleeve Sun Shirt

29332_violet_riding

I’ll admit I am not religious with putting on sunscreen, even though I know it is so important! Every summer I get burnt shoulders and arms from riding in the sun, and you can’t forget the awful farmer’s tan! This sun shirt is powered by Coolcore fabric, which is known for its moisture wicking and cooling abilities. It provides SPF 50 to protect you from harmful UV rays. At $39.95, this is a must for the summer season.

7. Smartpak SmartMesh Fly Sheet

My horse is extremely bothered by flies. Even just a couple can make him moody. Last year, I had a really hard time with his fly sheet making him too hot. I didn’t know what to do because the sheet definitely repelled better than the spray, but he was getting covered in sweat! Well I realized I didn’t have a lightweight, breathable fly sheet like the SmartMesh Sheet. This sheet is made out of an entirely different material than my previous one. The mesh allows air to flow freely in and out to help keep him cool! It comes with the neck guard attachment for just $99.95. Another good alternative flysheet that is almost the exact same thing, is the Weatherbeeta ComFiTec Ripshield, also coming with the detachable neck guard for $129.95.

8. UGARD Supplement

Supplement Image

Guys, this stuff is life changing. 2 months ago, I started Z on this supplement, in addition to the Ulcerguard paste for treatment of ulcers. I have finished with the paste treatment and I have continued to keep him on the supplement weeks after. He is so much more of a happier horse! He was suffering from the bad ulcers and that made him extremely irritable in cross-ties and nippy throughout the whole tacking process. I can absolutely tell he is no longer in pain. If you would like more info on treating ulcers with UGARD and Ulcergard paste, I would be happy to share with you how I did it without going broke!

9. Roma ProTek Wither Relief Pad

I have used and loved Roma pads of different types for years. This one is a great addition to the barn by offering protection under your saddle. It is available in either front or back lift to fit the needs of your saddle and horse. It is black in color and made of foam material that doesn’t absorb moisture, making it easy to keep clean! This pad retails for $29.95.

10. Smartpak Small Circles AP Saddle Pad

This one reminds me very much of my circle pad from Roma. I have found the circle pattern provides much more cushion, in my opinion. Coming in a variety of fun colors, at only $19.95, this is one you don’t want to miss out on!

7. New Riding Sport By Dover Essential Breech

I have always worn the Riding Sport breeches, as I have found they are an affordable quality breech that will stand up to heavy use. They are comfortable and stretchy. Dover has redesigned them and I am loving the new logo! There is a cute little horse head on the top right hip. They have integrated EquiTru Rise technology that helps the breeches better form and stay formed to your body. They are offered in a variety of colors, including this bright strawberry that I may just have to try! $49.00

8. New Riding Sport by Dover Essential Full Seat

Breeches and Riding Pants

Can someone tell me why there are breeches out there that cost hundreds of dollars?? I’ve heard great things about some of the high-end brands like Tailored Sportsman, but if you’re on a budget like me, you’re looking for an affordable price without sacrificing good quality.  I’ve tried a couple cheaper options that I would not recommend due to poor quality.  However, there are three brands of breeches and other riding pants that I wear and would recommend purchasing!

Riding Sport by Dover

Screen Shot 2019-03-09 at 2.19.13 PM

This is my favorite brand of breeches for many reasons. Dover always puts out quality products. Their breeches are made of strong material and meant to last. They have a variety of options from fun colors to different styles. They have a basic riding pant that I would recommend for casual schooling. Full-seat breeches can sometimes run a high dollar. The Riding Sport Full Seat Breeches are a great option for an affordable price.I have worn mine for over a year now. Lastly, they also have breeches with more of the competitor look to help you shine in the show ring! Definitely check these out at your local Dover store on online their website.

Devon Aire

Screen Shot 2019-03-09 at 2.20.37 PM

I picked up a pair of these last second for a show one time and they have never let me down! I love the ribbed material and the stitching on the knee patches. These are breathable and perfect for summer. Always under $100, Devon Are delivers a quality riding pant for a very affordable price.

Tuff Rider

Screen Shot 2019-03-09 at 2.29.46 PM.png

Let me start by saying that I only recommend a couple of the riding pants products from Tuff Rider. I have had great success with these two styles and I would advise you to stick to them when shopping the brand. Their ribbed breeches are great quality and I have used them for showing. They have a very sleek and clean look with a subtle logo printed on the knee patches. Tuff Rider also offers a ventilated riding tight. These things are incredible! They are made of dry-fit material with ventilation along the outsides of the legs and silicone grips on the insides. These are so comfortable and easy to slip on and go. My favorite to ride in during the summer!

Tuff Rider offers a variety of products, but I would not recommend their starter breeches or any of their pull-on breeches. I have found they easily rip and acquire holes after only a few rides. This is due to the material being so thin. They are very easy to break at the seams.

You can find Devon Are and TuffRider at Dover, Stateline Tack, and Amazon. Let me know if you try one of these for the first time…I’d love to hear how it works out for you!

Brand Spotlight: Rosettes and Rose

isla_280x280.34139019_24ro52dw

I have recently come across this brand and have gotten to work with Emily some. Let me say this brand rocks! Emily totally understands the struggles of finding equestrian fashion that isn’t over priced, so she’s come out with her own line! Rosettes and Rose offers a wide variety of products including t-shirts, belts, and other accessories. They are for the equestrian fashionistas, who don’t take things too seriously and are down to chill and have a glass of wine at the end of a long day. Let’s take a look at what they’ve got to offer and I’ll show you how I’ve put together some of my favorite items into outfits!

T-shirts

The t-shirts from Rosettes and Rose are ADORABLE! They have a variety of cute sayings and patterns. The best thing about these shirts though are the price. T-shirts range from only $10-$15! That is such a steal for equine t-shirts right now with all the competitors out there. That means you can get multiple shirts for the price you’d pay for one with another company. Or just save your $$$ and grab one cute t-shirt for a good price! There are shirts for everyone carrying youth and adult sizes. There is even a shirt for your mom pictured above! “I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a horse show mom.” Love it!

Belts

You just got lucky if you are coming across this blog post because Rosettes and Rose offers the cutest belts in several styles, all for affordable prices! The stretchy belts are so comfortable and easy to put on. They come in different widths so they are perfect for any pants, including side zip. Rosettes and Rose can now even monogram your belt for you! Belts range from $20-30 and come in a variety of colors.

Other Accessories

Other accessories offered include logo hats, socks, jewelry, and more! The logo hats are adorable and come in the choice of several bright colors. Their boot socks are so unique with the patterns available. Both of these items only run $15!

My ROOTD

Here are two riding outfits of the day that I put together with some of my Rosettes and Rose gear! They are so easy to create a simple style with. I love my shirts and belt!

Choosing a Helmet

When it comes to protecting your noggin, I don’t suggest finding the cheapest way out. While many helmets are extremely expensive and overpriced, there are still several options available that are great quality and reasonably priced. I have gone through a few different helmets over the years, and I’ve found that the helmet you buy has a lot to do with what your equestrian goals are as well. Different helmet options fit certain aspirations better than others. I will take you through my recommendations for everyone from new equestrians and casual pleasure riders to those active in the show ring.

The Ovation

Image result for ovation deluxe schooler helmet

This is a great starter helmet. When I got back into riding after a several year break, this was the first helmet that I got. Priced at $60, the Ovation is an affordable option that is still stylish and ASTM certified. I really like the sleek look of these helmets, as some cheaper helmets have the tendency to look clunky. They also have great ventilation for rides in the summer heat. I would recommend the Ovation to anyone just starting out lessons or the casual rider who is not looking to seriously show. However, you can pull a velvet cover over it to attend smaller local shows.

The Charles Owen JR8

Image result for charles owen jr8

Let me start off by saying that I love the look of Charles Owen helmets. They look classic and frame your face so well. The JR8 is a similar match to the popular GR8, with the only major difference being the style of strapping. The JR8 is priced at $150-$200 (depending on sales running) which is about half the price of the GR8. The JR8 is a great show helmet. It provides a professional look with the suede exterior. It doubles as a schooling helmet for Fall-Spring. The only downside to this helmet is the ventilation is lacking. I would not suggest riding in this helmet during summer months. When I had this helmet, I used it for shows and schooling until it got too hot at the end of spring. Then I would use my Ovation during the summer. I would recommend the JR8 to someone looking to move up a level in their equestrian gear, wanting a quality show helmet, or anyone who lives in an area with mild summers.

The One K Defender

Image result for one k defender

I love this helmet! I think because it reminds me of the Samshield, but not of their price! The Defender doubles as a schooling and showing helmet. It has great ventilation and a removable, washable liner. It comes in a few different styles to choose from, including a gorgeous rose gold stripe. The One K Defender retails for $240-260 depending on the style. I would recommend this helmet only to those that are committed to riding and will be in the show ring consistently, mainly because the price is a big step up from the Ovation and JR8. Still, this is a great price for such a quality, stylish helmet.

The GPA Little Lady

Related image

Ahh now, this is the helmet I have now and I am so happy with that purchase. The sleek look and slightly larger visor are what caught my eye with this one. It’s low profile, ventilated, and has a removable washable liner. This is the little sister of the GPA First Lady. The only major difference between the two is the amount of ventilation. I have never had an issue with my head getting too hot in the Little Lady, even in the dead heat of summer. Retailing at $390, it is about half the price of the First Lady. The Little Lady is definitely for dedicated equestrians that are looking for something long term. It can be worn for schooling and showing. I would 10 out of 10 recommend this helmet! I expect it to last me many years.

Brand Spotlight: Equestrian Prep Collection

Equestrian Prep Collection is my favorite equestrian company for clothing and accessories. Their designs are all so unique and there is something for everyone! Whether you’re a casual rider, show ring regular, or just a crazy horse person, you will find a design that expresses you. Equestrian Prep has a huge variety of designs to choose from that are featured on short and long sleeved shirts, outerwear, caps, and more! Another thing that I love about Equestrian Prep Collection is their price point. Their prices are so much more reasonable than major competitors and they are always having products on sale! You can get t-shirts as cheap as $20! This is a genuine company, who instead of trying to rip you off, is trying to help you further express your love for horses and riding. I have two t-shirts and a rain jacket (that was sadly discontinued) from Equestrian Prep. My t-shirts are my favorite things to ride in, especially when the weather gets warm. I wear the rain jacket on the regular. It is great quality and perfect for the barn or around town.

I wanted to share with you my current favorite design of theirs that came out not too long ago.

I really like this design because of its message. There is a lot of negativity in the world and unfortunately, the equestrian community is not exempt from it. The message is simple. We do this because we love it. We shouldn’t ever forget that. We fell in love with this sport because of these amazing creatures and the bonds we share with them. While it’s fun to be competitive, at the end of the day it is not about the ribbons, the reputation, or what anyone else thinks or says about you. It is about the horse and the fact that you are living what you love to do.

They have several items on sale right now! So head on over to Equestrian Prep Collection to check out their amazing and affordable designs.
